DUTTON BUICK GMC PROUDLY SERVING OUR COMMUNITY SINCE 1936
DUTTON BUICK GMC PROUDLY SERVING OUR COMMUNITY SINCE 1936
Riverside, CA - Dutton Buick GMC celebrates its 75th anniversary as a family-owned Riverside auto dealership. From 1936 until today, the Dutton family has provided quality vehicles and skilled service while building relationships with the families and businesses that comprise the local communities in the Riverside area.
"This anniversary has given us more reason than ever to look back on the rich history of the dealership. We've watched the Riverside area grow and flourish, and our family business has grown right along with it," said CW "Woody" Dutton, third-generation manager of the business.
FOUNDING AND EARLY HISTORY
While the roots of the dealership actually began in 1924, it made its way into the Dutton family in 1936, when Charles W. Dutton, Sr. and his partner Edgar L. McCoubrey bought it shortly after WWI. At that time, it was still named Rubidoux Motor Company, titled after the previous owner.
During WWII, McCoubrey ran the business single-handedly while Dutton Sr. served as an active Lt. Commander for the U.S. Navy. With no cars being manufactured (all factory lines were re-purposed for war efforts), the dealership existed solely on rentals to survive.
When the war came to a close, the Charles Dutton, Sr. returned stateside and commenced co-operation of the dealership. His partner, McCoubrey, became the active manager of the newly-acquired Plaza Motors in Palm Springs.
RIVERSIDE AUTO CENTER AND DUTTON BUICK GMC: THE MODERN DAYS
Charles Dutton, Sr., in addition to helping build the company since the 1930's, was instrumental in the creation of the Riverside Auto Center. Along with six other dealers, the Duttons invested in 55 acres at Adams and Indiana.
"I remember my dad vividly during those meetings," said Charles Dutton, Jr. "The dealers pulled names out of a hat to see which dealership would be located where. I can still remember exactly what that hat looked like."
The Riverside Auto Center officially opened for business in 1965 and has continued to be the area's go-to location for local automotive sales and service. In 1986, McCoubrey sold his portion in Palm Springs to the Dutton family. The next year, 1987, the dealership was renamed Dutton Buick GMC to celebrate the family company's legacy. Since then, Charles Dutton, Jr. has continued his father's legacy, adding Buick to the franchise in 2002. Today, Dutton Buick GMC is led by General Manager CW "Woody" Dutton III, Charles, Jr.'s son.
"It's such an honor to own and operate this dealership," he said. "It's not just a sign of our family heritage. It's a sign of the Riverside area's growth, and of the strength and evolution of General Motors and the American auto industry. Celebrating 75 years is such an honor, and I'm excited to continue this heritage-by serving and helping one customer, one business, one family at a time."
